If you’re tired of staring at the usual trees in your Florida yard, consider adding white-barked trees to your property! An ornamental tree with white bark adds visual interest to your yard when nestled alongside flowerbeds and shrubbery. While bark peeling off your tree and exposing a white trunk may look alarming, it’s natural for some species of tree.
Here’s a list of trees with white bark that will look amazing in your Orlando yard.
1. Silver Birch
Also known as the European birch, the silver birch can thrive in cooler climates and areas where other trees refuse to grow. Its dark green leaves turn a stunning shade of yellow in the fall, and it stands out from iconic Florida trees in most yards.
The silver birch has a large hanging canopy that provides ample shade for your yard. However, you should note that branches can rot while still on the tree. Remove rotting branches promptly so they don’t fall and injure someone.
2. White Birch
The white birch, also called canoe birch, gets its name because Native Americans used the tree to carve sturdy canoes. This tree is also called the paper birch because its bark peels off in thin layers. Some variants of the white birch feature egg-shaped leaves with furry undersides.
3. Ghost Gum
The ghost gum is an eye-catching tree that’s native to Australia. It features a trunk with white color and light pink patches that shed in thin layers as the tree ages.
White flowers accent the ghost gum’s canopy in the warm summer months. This tree is hardy to USDA Zones 9 through 11, so it thrives in Orlando’s hot, humid climate.
4. Plane Tree
Plane trees are among the most popular trees with white bark. Gardeners appreciate this white-barked tree for its prominently lobed leaves and visually interesting spiky seed balls. The plane tree does well in busy urban environments, like alongside bustling city roads. Plane trees require regular irrigation and don’t grow well in alkaline soil.
5. Whitebark Pine
The whitebark pine is a resilient tree that can thrive in extreme temperatures, high winds, rocky soil, and very high elevations. This tree features gnarled white bark and branches, small clumps of needles, and brown or purplish cones. Birds enjoy eating the seeds, so this tree can be appealing if you want to attract wildlife to the yard.
6. American Aspen
American aspen, also called quaking or trembling aspen, can grow up to 50 feet tall. It grows quickly, too, making it a good choice if you want a fast-maturing species. The smooth, white bark gradually darkens over time. American aspen does best with dry conditions and full sun.
