Let’s say you decided to cut a problem tree down on your property yourself, or you had an amateur service do it. The tree is rarely removed in its entirety; instead, a stump is left behind. For the most part, stumps are unobtrusive, but they can result in a few unwanted problems. A stump is an obstruction that makes lawn care difficult, and as they rot, they might ruin the look of your well-maintained yard. Tree stumps also attracts fungus, like poisonous mushrooms, that can be a health risk to overly curious children and pets. Instead of keeping the stump where it is, you can take care of the stump in two different ways: stump grinding or stump removal.
Both methods will take care of the stump, but each is wildly different. Let’s take a look!
Stump grinding uses professional machinery to grind down the stump till there is nothing there. Well, visibly that is. The tree roots will remain after a tree stump. The tree roots themselves will eventually decay though it might bring about sprouts and fungi, or even regrow the stump.
Stump removal, or stump pulling, uproots the entire stump from the ground requiring a tremendous amount of force. Uprooting a whole stump from the ground leaves behind a cavernous hole, which you’d want to fill in. The method guarantees no regrowth and eliminates the process of root decay.
Now that you know about each method, it is time to compare the two.
Stump Grinding vs. Removal
When considering which method to have a professional tree service perform, there are a few things to consider. One of those things is costs. Stump grinding is a far more cost-efficient method than stump removal. Stump removal requires removing and disposing of the tree stump, and the extra cost in filling the hole. Stump removal, though definitive, is costlier because of the multiple steps that must be taken to perform properly. The second thing to consider is your long-term lawn care plans. Stump grinding leaves behind roots that might allow fungus and sprouts to form and the potential for the stump to regrow. You will have to be attentive to remove unwanted mushrooms and spouts, or break up the regrowing stump, until the roots completely decay, which can take up to ten years!
