Even though McCullough Tree Service prunes and removes trees all over Central Florida, we aren’t just blindly cutting and trimming. Where these tasks are important and should be performed by professionals, our expert tree crews also know that a good tree canopy needs to remain in place for more reasons than you might think.
Tree canopies, or the upper-level of leaves, perform and promote a lot of natural functions that enhance the lives of human beings — functions that we don’t normally think about.
They produce oxygen. Trees take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen after making the sugars they need to thrive. As they take in the carbon dioxide, though, they also take in and hold gaseous pollutants like sulfur dioxide in their bark and leaves, getting them out of our way and out of the air we breathe. It’s a bonus benefit of trees. And the bigger they are, the more they detoxify our air.
They help us conserve energy. Trees are shade machines through a process called evapotranspiration. Trees release water through little openings on their leaves, cooling the air around them. And in Central Florida, trees’ cooling effects are welcome, welcome respite. You’ll notice that parking spaces shaded by trees are generally occupied, especially in the summer, by cool cars; those trees also shade a parking lot’s concrete or asphalt, reducing the amount of heat radiating from those surfaces. A well-placed tree around a building can cut air-conditioning needs by 30 percent, according to the U.S.D.A. Forest Service.
They clean water. Near streams, trees improve water quality. When water has pollutants such as fertilizers, pesticides or sediment flowing downstream, trees remove those substances in shallow groundwater or in surface runoff. Their leaves filter rainwater on its way down, before it gets absorbed into the ground.
In an economic sense, meanwhile, mature trees with impressive canopies hike property values. Trees are a natural, beautiful part of a landscape if you are selling a home.
“A mature tree can often have an appraised value of between $1,000 and $10,000,” according to the Council of Tree and Landscape Appraisers. Mature trees with robust canopies, after all, don’t just appear overnight. There is an established system used among arborists, real-estate professionals and others on how to appraise trees based on type, condition, age and other factors.
