It’s normal for people to gravitate toward shady trees to help cool down. We like to sit under shade trees, or park our cars under them. 
In our yards, tree canopies help shade the air-conditioning condenser so it won’t have to work quite as hard, potentially saving us in electric costs. A tree that helps block sun from a window — even partially — keeps the warmth from beating down into that room, keeping us more comfortable here in the Orlando area.

Potential problems with planting a shade tree too close to the house:
They cause pressure to utility lines, to your home’s foundation, to walkways and sidewalks. Roots creep underground while we are enjoying a tree’s shade, unaware that those roots are causing damage and cracking. Fluctuation of the soil, with the tree taking up moisture, can cause problems when the soil expands and contracts, also resulting in foundation damage. Tree roots in general can grow up to three times the height of the tree.
The tree could topple or a heavy limb could break and fall, damaging your house, vehicle, or a person on your property.

- Silver Maple (notorious for clogging water lines)

- Cottonwoods
- Willows

- Sycamore
- Black Locust
In general, trees like Japanese Maple, Crabapple or Serviceberry trees are safer bets for closer to the house, say 20 feet or so. Oak and Sugar Maple trees are other safer options in terms of root damage.
