Is That Tree Safe to Keep?

A tree risk assessment answers one question: how likely is this tree to fail, and what would it hit if it did? It's the step before deciding to prune, cable or remove a tree, and it's especially worth doing before hurricane season or after a storm.

McCullough Tree Service has 3 ISA-certified arborists on staff. An arborist visits your property, looks at the whole tree from the roots to the canopy, and explains what they see in plain words.

What the Arborist Checks

  • The root zone and soil: heaving, rot, construction damage, mushrooms at the base
  • The trunk: cracks, cavities, leaning, old wounds
  • Branch unions: weak or split joins between large stems
  • The canopy: dead wood, thinning, heavy or over-extended limbs
  • What's underneath: your house, driveway, pool cage, fences, power lines

Your Options After the Assessment

Most trees don't need to come down. Depending on what the arborist finds, the recommendation may be pruning to remove dead or heavy limbs, cabling to support a weak union, treatment for disease or pests, or removal when the tree can't be made safe. You decide what to do; there's no pressure to remove a healthy tree.
