Taking the Strain Off Long, Heavy Limbs
Big oaks often grow limbs that reach far out over roofs, pools and driveways. All that weight sits at the end of the limb, and in wind or rain it puts huge strain where the limb joins the trunk. Weight reduction pruning shortens those limbs back to healthy side branches, so they carry less weight and are less likely to break.
McCullough Tree Service's ISA-certified arborists decide which limbs to reduce and by how much, so the tree keeps its shape and stays healthy.
When a Tree Needs Weight Reduction
- Long horizontal limbs over the house, pool enclosure or driveway
- Limbs that sag noticeably or have cracked before
- Trees with a weak or split branch union carrying a heavy limb
- Trees that have lost neighboring trees and are now more exposed to wind

Reduction, Not Topping
We cut back to a side branch large enough to take over, which the tree can seal and grow from. Topping, cutting limbs to stubs, causes decay and weak regrowth, so we never do it. For limbs that need extra support, weight reduction can be combined with tree cabling.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is weight reduction pruning?
Shortening long or heavy limbs back to healthy side branches to reduce the load they carry.
Is it the same as topping?
No. Topping cuts to stubs and harms the tree. Reduction cuts are made to side branches the tree can grow from.
Can it save a limb that has a crack?
Sometimes, together with cabling. An arborist needs to check the crack first.
How often is it needed?
Usually every few years, as the tree regrows. We can schedule it in a tree care plan.
